How is a "dummy" (magazine page layout) made?

The layout and production of JAXFAX Travel Marketing Magazine involves loging all the current ads and their respective sizes and requested placement. Plus entering the length ot each editorial features and listings section. for each monthly issue.

Creating a dummy -below-using Proteus Editions Version 4.3.4.

I remember creating my own templates and having to endlessly check lists against insertion orders for display advertisemnt to make sure no ads were left out of an issue. We used stickies then on blank signatures templates that I had designed in Quark Express...

The page layout software, Proteus Editions Version 4.3.4., has given me peace of mind.

I can sort the ads per status : Controvertial, Pending, Firm, Cancel.
or per section (JAXFAX has 8 geographical sections and some ads need to be placed in these)
or per placed/unplaced which also gives the page number location.

I have tailored the information for each ad to include details such as the price for the insertion. the ID of the sales person, the color in the ad (B & W or CMYK).
The Caption field is particularly useful. It lets you enter additional detail that will be displayed on the dummy. I use it for information regarding the placement such as a specific city within a geographical section or the version of the ad. For the editorial I use thew caption field to show the jumps in an article (to/from).

The only problem I have with this software is that after 4 years the file has become huge. Due to a bug aI was told : the software records each entry/deletion made, somewhere where it cannot be purged. It has become so bad that with 1.25GB memory on my system I still can't print the dummy. So until an upgrade is available I'll just take a screen shot of it and print that after some twicking. It's all about adaptation isn't it.
